Chinese Cloisonneé and Ivory Mythological Figure. China, c. 1960's. The large figurine's body in gilt copper, comprising the intricately textured armor, helmet, and overrobe of a warrior-hero. His hands and head well-carved in tinted and painted ivory. The man stands with feet dramatically splayed, one hand holding a halberd, the other in Buddhist-like gesture with two fingers raised. Central to the warrior's appearance is the finely crafted cloisonnee enamel work covering the metal body. The armored shoes, cuirass and arm plates, richly patterned in black, gold, tan, reds, white, and blues. His handsome robe chiefly in greens, subtly tinted in blue, with basic pattern of celestial clouds, interspersed in which are circular medallions of rampant or intertwined dragons. A similar enameled and gem encrusted helmet is attached the ivory head. Height: 22-3/4". Piece shows dent, with minor enamel losses at one shoulder, with glue repairs to the mustaches, nevertheless the Chinese hero remains an impressive work of craftsmanship.
Estimated Value $500 - 750.

Lot 2596
A Chiparus-Style Bronze and Ivory Sculpture of Salome. A copy after Chiparus of one of his more celebrated works, La Danseuse Salomé. Stepping delicately forward, balanced on the tips of her toes, she stretches and arches with a feline grace that her filmy garments serve only to accentuate her sexual allure -- an enticement that would cost John the Baptist his head. The cast bronze well detailed, and patinated to a warm hazel or walnut brown. Her head and feet are hand-carved in ivory, and finely so. The whole figure on a richly textured alabaster onyx base. Figure height: 13-3/4"; Overall height: 18-3/4".

Dimitri Chiparus (1886 - 1947). Born in Romania, Dimitri Chiparus immigrated to Paris, where he studied under Mercier and Jean Boucher. Chiparus was an extremely prolific artist, producing a wide variety of mainly small-scale figures. These were executed generally either all in bronze, or in a combination of bronze and ivory (chryselephantine), with some editions occurring occasionally in more than one size. His last recorded exhibit was in 1939. Although his feminine figures and dancers made his reputation, making his one of the names synonymous with the term Art Deco, he also produced a vast array of sculptures of children. He died in Paris, in 1947.
Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,200.

An Orchestra of Miniature Instruments in Carved Stone. China, 20th century. Carved from jade, serpentine, carnelian, tiger's eye, jasper, rose quartz, aventurine, zoisite, malachite, and more, these miniatures are all well detailed, and complete with strings. Most are Chinese traditional string instruments, such as the exotic sounding erhu, pipa, gerhu, ruan, and sanxian. A few are crossovers, more like Renaissance pieces in appearance -- the sheng, resembling a barrel organ; a suona, like an early clarinet, and a piece resembling a fiddle, but with sharply bent fret. Along with these, a miniture lute, said to be 19th century English work, which is covered in tortise shell, with bone or ivory parts. Lastly, a finely crafted miniature cello, in travelling case, with bow and stand, and complete with its own block of rosin! Some of the jade pieces with, or in need of minor repair; the lute very fine, the cello like new. Many of the stone instruments have their own fitted wooden stands. Lengths: 2-1/2" -8".
Estimated Value $150 - 250.
